First things first. Why do we need to register ownership with our original songs? There are 2 major reasons:

a) Protection from copying
whether it is the lyrics, the melody, the riff or the overall package of the song is copied intentionally(or unintentional), we should make sure to get it register first before we release it to the general public. This is to protect our creative effort in making the song, and the first person to rake the benefits from it should be you yourself, and not others.

b) Protection from using
whether it will be used for an event, or to market a certain product, we should make sure that we are given our dues for the effort in creating the song before others benefit from it. Royalties are meant to compensate artists for what they have created.
